Argan oil is principally composed of mono-unsaturated (up to 80%) and saturated (up to 20%) fatty acids. As minor components, it contains polyphenols, tocopherols, sterols, squalene, and triterpene alcohols. Together with the mono-unsaturated fatty acids, these minor components are responsible for its beneficial effects.

The antioxidant effect of Argan oil protects the cells from oxidative damage from UV radiation in the absence of melanin following its depigmenting effect on the skin, thus giving a scientific basis to the traditionally claimed effect on the reduction of the rate of appearance of wrinkles and in fighting dry skin.

The Argan Tree

(Argania Spinosa)

Sustainably-Farmed

Preserving the Argan Tradition

The Argan tree (Argania spinosa) is an endemic plant of south-western Morocco due to its botanical  and  bio-ecological  interest  as  well  as  its  social value. It covers an area of 5200 square Kilometers that constitutes a unique biotope, named ‘the Argan forest’. Within the area where the argan grows there are about 21 million trees which play a vital role in the food chain and the environment. The tree resists domestication and remains extremely difficult to transplant or establish on any meaningful scale outside Morocco. Nearly 90% of the rural economy in the region depends on argan-based agroforestry.

Argan oil for cosmetic use is cold-pressed oil extracted from unroasted kernels of argan fruit, which at present has gained worldwide recognition. It has been referred to as the “most expensive vegetable and cosmetic oil” and as such has been a source of income for many Moroccan women who are members of cooperatives run by women.

Women-led Argan Oil Cooperatives

Empowering local women at Argan oil cooperatives

Argan oil cooperatives have been established in Morocco over the past decade providing employment opportunities for women inhabiting the Argan forest area.

Most argan oil is produced by local cooperatives of Amazigh-speaking Berber women around the cities of Agadir, Essaouira and Taroudant where the argan tree is common and where only the nuts that have naturally fallen from the tree are collected.

It takes up to three days of grinding for every woman to get one litre of Argan oil.
